Clinic Postponed

For those of you looking forward to this years floorball clinic with Jani Kukola and Jani Naumanen we have some sad news. Unfortunately it has been postponed indefinitely.

Due to shortage of funding and also with the Men's WFC being in Finland this year they're all preparing for a lot to happen there.

Although we will miss having them here we want to wish them and all the teams playing in the WFC 2010 all the best.

Labour Day Floorball Challenge

What a long weekend but what an awesome one. For the last 3 years or so we've been organizing this fun event for local Penang clubs and also one or 2 teams from KL.

This year we were graced by the presence of two wonderful teams all the way from Singapore...NTU Hurricanes and SGS (Juniors....as we fondly now know them as here) making up the total of 8 teams that we had attending this years LDFC. The other teams being Innebandy!Co., Ztec 1 & 2, Contact and Dalat 1 & 2.

Unfortunately, Subang Rascals - Defending Champs who have held the title and taken home the challenge trophy for the last few years were not able to make the games this year due to a conflict of events scheduled.

All the Singaporeans were here actually for two main reasons - a great time playing floorball and a great time exploring the wonderful cuisine that Penang has to offer like assam laksa, curry mee (curry laksa for the Singaporeans reading this), char koay teow and anything and everything else that Gurney drive and all the other food joints have to offer. Main goal - not to worry about whether or not the take home any medals but they had to make sure that their belly was satisfied.

Now, having said all the above, some of our local teams were out to draw some blood from the games. They came with guns blazing and it was really fun to watch all these teams vie for a spot at the top. They were all ready, willing and able to push everything to the limit.

From the 2 pools that were drawn up we had after the first day of games the top of the table teams Innebandy, Ztec 1, Contact and Dalat 1. The bottom of the table teams were Hurricanes, SGS Juniors, Ztec 2 and Dalat 2. It was a very very long Saturday.

Sunday was awesome because from the crossover pool Dalat 1 and team Contact had a difficult time playing teams from the "group of death". So both our teams had already decided that we'd meet each other in the finals for 3rd and 4th place. True to expectations that's exactly what happened. Both finals were exhilarating from start to finish.

Team Contact took the lead 3-0 the first half. In the 2nd half although very shorthanded Dalat 1 fought their way back and tied the game at 3-3 but team Contact were relentless and their never say give up attitude won them a 3rd place spot on the podium in the tournament as they finished out the game 5-3.

Team Innebandy and Ztec 1 also had a similar final, From start to finish everyone was on the edge of their seat. Supporters willing their teams to go on and score....ooohhs and aaahhhs every time there was a near miss...screams of ecstasy every time their goalie saved one from going in....what a night and unfortunately there had to be a winner and a loser. At the end of regulation time Innebandy had snatched the gold medal and also the challenge trophy from Ztec's hands. So close yet so far....for team Ztec the have next year to look forward to try and steal it from this years champs Innebandy!Co. And for the reigning champs bragging rights to have their names inscribed into the challenge trophy for years to come and also a chance to defend their title next year.

To all the people who were referees and helpers at the table, timekeepers, Alvin (Salibandy), teams from Singapore and Steve Liss who found the hockey score clock for us to use a HUGE THANK YOU for all the assistance and time you gave into making this tournament possible and as smooth as it was.

We hope to see you again next year.

If you remember sometime around the same time last year and also the previous year we had a few great floorballers come in to town and assist in helping us grow in our skills. What an awesome time we had!! :-)

This year we're looking at these great floorballers back in Penang again. How awesome is it when we have some of the world's best come and assist us in making our game better. It's like having your favourite "superstar" footballers like Ronaldinho, Messi and Torres take time out from their busy schedule, come in to little Penang wanting to teach the kids here how to be better footballers and they only have 10 kids show up to a training clinic because Mat Rempit is holding his own training session for his club at the same time and isn't interested in cancelling it.....what a total waste of their time and talent. We hear that and we get incensed that something like it would happen.

Unfortunately it has been like that for the last couple of years because of the lack of interest from the local floorball scene. We'd rather hold our own practice session than to glean from the years of experience of these top international players. Dismal numbers to show for both clinics....disappointing to say the least. Maybe that's why Malaysian floorball is where it's at....at a stand still.

Let's not this slip thru the cracks and let's get this game going here in Malaysia and onto the next level.

It's Been Awhile

Wow.....how long has it been?? Too long I guess.

It's been a quiet year for the Eagles, floorball wise. Whether it been a fruitful one is yet to be determined. We're drawing closer to the Junior Floorball Carnival and also the Labour Day Floorball Challenge. As we draw closer to the day my heart as team manager/ captain/ coach skips a beat. The chance to showcase my players and team always gets the better of me. Are we at a place where we can dominate....probably not. :-) But the real test is to me the test not of just skill but of determination, self-control and the true spirit of floorball.

Soon all will be revealed.

Poorly Attended World Class Clinic

A year ago we had the first No. 1 world ranked floorball player from Finland. His name, Jani Kukola, in Penang helping us run a clinic. This year yet again we had the opportunity to host not just one but two great players, one of them being the No. 1 world ranked floorball goalkeeper also from Finland. For those of you who missed out on being at our clinic with Jani and Jukka, all I can say is what an unfortunate loss it is for you.

Words escape me when we have such great world class players flying in to little ol’ Penang where we’re trying to (“desperately” so it seems but I guess NOT) grow floorball; and we only draw a crowd of a handful of people. The minimal charge of RM20 (the equivalent of 4 Euros)for the clinic was just too much to pay for this (which by the way was in the end waived) star-studded clinic. This shows me how small our minds are and also why our level of sports and floorball is where it’s at.

Yes, it was sort of “last minute” that we got word of their coming here to run a clinic……2 weeks notice. Yes, it was to be mainly for goalkeepers with Jani being the main attraction. Yes, Jukka was sort of an unknown to us other than the fact that he ONLY plays in Finlands Div 1.

What an embarrassing turn out with only 3 goalkeepers and 10 other people showing up to what should’ve been a no brainer to show up to. The questions that run constantly thru my mind…..are we really committed, are we really serious, are we driven by peoples hearsay….the list continues.

But for those who had a chance to be there, to take part in the clinic, their praise and gratitude unending. The wealth of information that was poured out in just the 3 hours from the years of experience, unparalleled. Could you get this type of information from going to club training…yes, to a fraction of a degree of our finite knowledge of floorball. The best 3 hours of floorball that we’ve had in a long time.

Hopefully……….next year will be different and will have more of a showing.

Hey everyone out there. Hope all's been going well.

Just wanted to let you know that we've gotten a great opportunity. We'll be hosting a clinic in Penang at the Dalat International School gym. This is a MUST, especially for all aspiring goalkeepers and anyone else interested in playing this great game. This clinic will be open to all.

Floorball At Its Finest.....For Us

Recently Dalat had the pleasure of hosting the Labour Day Floorball Challenge. We only had a total of six teams participate (which was a little disheartening). Many of our local teams weren't able to join this event which in the end turned out to be better than expected. If you scroll down to the some of the earlier posts you'll get to see the teams that participated.

Many people asked me why organize something when it's not going to be well attended by teams. Now if you know me, you'll know that organizing floorball games has not been about the attendance but rather all about the teams that get to play the game. A quote from Dr. Hermann Brandt - "The objective of human physical activities is not to make champions, but rather to help construct a harmonious society! " Am I saying that making champions is wrong? Absolutely not! Am I saying that without games we can't create a harmonious society? Absolutely not either, it's in playing that we grow as individuals and also as a team and gain wider perspective on people and society.

The best part about organizing the LDFC was that since it was such a short event was the fact that when teams were in between games able to stay and cheer for opposing teams that were playing their matches. It was awesome to see such camaraderie in the midst of such rivalry on the court. From the newest of teams like the St. Xavier's Floorball team that didn't win any of their games but in my opinion played the hardest all the way to the end, to the guys who took the championship - the Subang Rascals (who had some superstar players). Everyone including the referees (that were still catching their breath from playing the game before due to a lack of them) played their part and that made it an exceptionally beautiful weave of give and take and also working hand in hand to make it the best two days possible.

So, the question posed......."would I run the event again?" Absolutely YES!!! And it's all credit to the guys/ teams that played and made it a great two days and it would be for them and any others who would love to join us next year as well.

We'll see you then.

A great BIG SHOUT OUT!!! to all who helped make this tournament a great success. To all the teams that participated, the referees, the supporters and all the amazing people who helped at the table with the timing and keeping score throughout the two days of competition and to Dalat International School for allowing us to host this tournament. We couldn't have done it without you.

The Saintz FC guys did me proud the day of the tournament....they were a little on the early side coming in for the LDFC and I put them to work and without hesitation they stepped up and completed the task of setting up the boards and taking out the Futsal goalposts from the gym.

Their "never say die" attitude throughout the games would have also made their coach Jason Chan Ming Hwee very proud too. Fairly newcomers to the game of floorball, yet it never stopped them from putting their best foot forward. It was a rocky start as they faced off against giants Subang Rascals, but eventually found their footing by the end of the day when they played Ztec 8cers and only conceded two goals. Great finish guys!!

THE EAGLE HAS LANDED!!!

Everyone must be wondering......."boy what a joker this guy is, from weekly blogs to suddenly completely nothing." The truth is I've had my password set to auto start on my computer and when it crashed I for the life of me couldn't remember what it was until yesterday when I was rummaging thru all my junk in my office........lo and behold, I come across a piece of paper that I had scribbled on. There it was, the site name, password and e-mail link. I tried it and sure enough, were back in business.

I was looking at the last posting and nearly a whole year has gone by........10 months just short of two days. Thankfully that won't happen again. There's so many other blogs out there I was thinking that I should just discontinue this one at first but then again this is our Dalat blog and our opinion does matter. We're a minority group here on the island but we're still a voice.

Like I said earlier, we're back and if you'd like to drop us a line or story feel free to e-mail us or chat with us.

By the way, the borakborakfloorball guys have started updating scores from the APAC 2009 in Korea, so drop by their site from time to time to catch some of the game updates.

Malaysia didn't fare so well in their first game against Japan, 14-1. We haven't seen that sort of a score line since the 2004 WFC in Spain. But we still want to remember them as they represent our country and encourage them to hold their heads up high and fight even harder as they represent us. ALL THE BEST BOYS!!!

Hi everyone......wow......it's been a while since I've been on to update stuff. My apologies to all you readers out there.

Some great news, this weekend for just a few hours in Penang, we will be having Jani Kukola from Finland with us. This is really exciting!!!

Dalat has been given the great opportunity of hosting him, he’ll only be here for just a few hours and we’d like to try to make the most of it. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to meet someone of this caliber here in this region.

We will be holding a clinic from 1-5pm in the Dalat gym. He’ll be teaching team dynamics and skills for beginners and those who’ve been playing for a while already.

We are charging RM50 per person for entrance...... this is to cover his flight from Singapore for the day. Registration will be open right up till the time the clinic begins.

We hope to see you there with us.

News From Singapore

The game was between Moosemen and Blacks FC, it was the last fixture of the night. Moosemen, who were already 3^rd on the Singapore Floorball League table desperately needed to beat Blacks FC by as many goals as possible, in order for them to stand a chance of defending their SFL title. Blacks FC, on the hand had only pride to play for as they had yet to get a win throughout the whole league and were already relegated prior to the match against the mighty Moosemen.

We needed to score more than 25 goals against Blacks FC in order to match the huge goal difference between ZARF and Skools Innebandy. The belief of scoring 25 goals against them increased when we saw a depleted bench of Blacks FC with only 7 players present for the match (this was including their goalie). We on the other hand had a full squad and the Blacks were surely staring defeat even before the game began.

Within the first 30 seconds, the first goal was scored. Blacks FC tried defending to minimize the deficit; however, the goals just keep flowing. Even before the first half ended, both Filip and Timothy had gotten themselves hat-tricks respectively. The period ended with Moosemen leading by 10 goals to nothing.

Our coach was pretty satisfied with our team’s play and tempo of the game and urged the players to continue doing what they were doing. The second period started off with more “ONE WAY TRAFFIC” play. It was indeed brutal, but there was nothing we could do as we needed to get ourselves back in contention for the SFL title. I really did feel for the Blacks replacement goalie.

The Blacks finally realized they had nothing to lose and with 10 minutes left on the clock, they switched to a counter attack strategy and managed to catch Moosemen off guard. By doing so they managed to put away 2 goals past me. (Honestly, both the goals were pretty crappy goals to concede) The final score 35-2, one of the biggest margins ever in the history of the Singapore Floorball League. The score line was so great that the score board ran out of numbers and had to start all over again.

Everyone predicted a trashing, but no one believed that it would be one of this magnitude. Full credit must be given to Blacks FC players as they fought hard to minimize the score line, but it just wasn’t their night as Moosemen was at their best attacking form that night.

Hey there everyone, I recently came across this article and have started working with the people in promoting floorball thru this great website. It's amazing what they're doing across the globe so to speak. If you think we had it bad here in Penang when we first started out on basketball courts that completely wrecked our blades think again. Click on the link and check out what the kids in Djibouti, Africa are doing.........this will amaze you and inspire you. (LinKen, the cover pic of the page looks like you when you first started training at my house in Taman Sri Nibong.............lol)

Projects are sprouting out eveywhere thru their persistence. I think the dream and realization of having floorball as an official olympic sport is coming sooner than we think.

Gordon Bombay is forced to withdraw from the minor hockey league with a knee injury. Much to his surprise, he is given the job of coach of Team USA Hockey for the Junior Goodwill Games in California. With most of the Ducks and a few new players in tow, he sets forth for LA. All appears to be going well for a while, but the hype of Hollywood starts to get to Gordon, and he is distracted when Iceland, the favourites to win the title end up in the finals, but of course the Ducks clinch the title in the end. Tonight the same happened with the Hawks and Spartans. What looked like a sure and easy win for the Spartans (the supposedly stronger of the two teams) to take the Div 1 second spot from Inne turned out to be their massacre. The underdawgs came from behind to deny them of that spot. The Hawks came in to this final with one goal in mind.....and that was to win at least one game in this league. Their dedication and determination paid off tonight when they took the Spartans by surprise.

Tonight Ztec again went about their duty to seal their place as no. 2 in the division. Clinical as it was it also looked very comical as they obviously weren't playing at full tilt. Many mistakes that should've been converted into points. Having said that, the Trojans who only played with 6 people showed extreme courage, determination and endurance. Wave after wave the attacks came but they stood steadfast to the end and played with all their heart. To them I take my hat off for their valiant effort and true show of sportsmanship.

So by now you've also found out that if you had followed my predictions you'd have lost lots of money big time.

Tonight the Fireants rose to the challenge, and of course when there is a rise there is also a fall and fall hard they did, Inne. It wasn't meant to be their nite. Unforced error after unforced error, they just could do no right tonight. With mistakes flowing freely the inevitable had to follow. To them it was like a bad April Fool's joke gone really wrong.

The Fireants were out to prove dominance from the get go and within just 2 secs of the face off they scored and sent massive shock waves thru Inne's camp. Blow by blow they meticulously chipped away at Inne's armour and no amount of magic spells could've made the difference tonight. It was just meant to be the Fireants time to shine. For them the spell has been broken and the years of prospecting has not proved to be in vain. They've finally struck gold!! Shouts of jubilation rang thru the arena as the final whistle was blown (twice for that matter). For them they had just made history for themselves.

Inne's loss tonight to the Fireants has sparked a flame in the hearts of the Spartans who play their final game against the Hawks this Saturday. If they can win the game, they'll steal 2nd place from Inne. What a greater blow that would be for them.

To the newly crowned Champions of Div. 1, we congratulate you!! Well done, you've completed your race.

To the fallen......yes defeat sucks and hurts like hell, but so goes life......pick yourselves up off the dirt and dust yourselves off.....there's always next year to try again.

Next year we look forward to joining the ranks of the "elite" so to speak and hopefully give everyone a run for their money. Look out the Eagles are swooping in!!!!

What's Over The Horizon??

My match predictions:
Ztec vs. Trojans 10-1
Innebandy vs. Fireants 3-2 (this is only bec Deswyn is back, otherwise the tables will be turned in favour of Fireants)

So......tomorrow brings the exciting prospects of maybe seeing a brand new division champion. If the Fireants can get their act together they can put a significant dent into the now very frail armour of Inne and claim the trophy for themselves. Will they make history happen for themselves or will they hand it to prospecting favourites and defending champs Innebandy!Co.?

If Inne's last game was one to judge by the Fireants will have a lot to shout, scream and cheer about. The question posed is, are they willing to fight tooth and nail to claim what could be rightfully theirs or let it slip thru their fingers yet again. They must be having "gold fever" by now after years of trailing behind a number of clubs where they came within reach of a number of gold medals. This year yet again, here they are in the very position to clinch the title. All that stands between them and their title hopes, a mere 2 points that will put them in the lead and out of the reach of any other Div 1 team for the rest of the league duration. Can they hold out and defend what they know should be rightfully theirs?

As for Inne, it should be their trophy for the taking tomorrow, but they're really not quite out of the woods yet as they have to play their very best against a very extremely determined and cutthroat team that will stop at nothing short of blood. With all their troops home, rallied and ready to go, maybe they'll be ready. The evening looked set to be filled with excitement as players from both teams filled the arena. Inne however were short of a few of their players..............10 minutes and counting, 5 minutes and counting, face off whistle goes and still not enough players. Finally a phone call comes in.......the voice on the other end of the line frantically conveying the message that their car full of Inne players has broken down. Ten minutes into the 1st period they show up.

Unfortunately the whole evening turned out to be very lackluster event. Hawks tried to go out with guns blazing but lacked the skill and know how of a more experienced floorball team. But what they lacked in skill and experience they made up for in sheer determination. As for Inne, if tonight was a sign of things to come, sad to say, I don't think they're taking the division title anytime soon. I think it's time they rethink their strategy and game play. If they're to take on the Fireants and hope to win they'll have to work way harder than they have been. Maybe this will be a wake up call for them to not just rest on their laurels and expect everything handed to them on a platter.

For the Fireants, this game just served up a glimmer of hope for the division title. All they need right now is to keep focused as they run the final leg of their race this Tuesday. Again, it all boils down to Tuesday.......it'll be a battle that only the coolest of heads that will finally win.

For Ztec, the evening was meant to be just another clinical game but for the bullets it was more than just that. It was a matter of pride. Altho' they had technically already lost to Ztec based on points they weren't going down without a fight. What a fight it was as they pushed themselves to the best of their ability to make known that they weren't mere "push-overs". For such a young team, they played with maturity beyond their years. For Ztec, you could tell that there was content written on all their faces as they played a relaxed game unlike the one they played against the Eagles.

As dark clouds loomed outside the arena, inside some other sort of darkness was brewing as the Spartans were going into battle to keep their spot at the top of their table in Div 1. The army of Ants were also prepped, ready and also seeking a comeback spot to the very place they were so rudely knocked off in their quest for division domination. It all seemed a little too ominous as both teams went into huddles to psych their teams.

The audience were entertained as they witnessed a very thriling tight game between the two teams. Each trying to outdo the other with every move and floorball skill, both fairly evenly matched. The heroes of Sparta, unfortunately, did not forsee the strength of the venom that was pulsing thru their veins which left them weakened with every stinging blow. In the times when the Spartans were most vulnerable, the Ants struck hard and left no prisoners. With the final strike they took the Spartans out of the equation in the medal run for gold.

The Ants will be looking at making history for themselves as well if they were to win the Div. 1 title and will definitely be pulling out all the stops for their final game against Inne. The question is will they be fielding their line 1 for the first 10 mins again? Don't miss the much anticipated game to be played on Tuesday the 1st of April, 8:15pm......and by the way.....it is really happening and isn't an April Fool's joke.

Tonight the Eagles came in for the final swoop to snatch our last game for a complete shut out and a clean sweep of the division title. We knew what had to be done and exactly how we wanted to do it. With the precision of a skilled surgeon with scalpel in hand we came in to the game and cut open a huge cavity into the opponents heart. LOL.......that's what we'd like to think we did. Unfortunately it was more like having Dr. Quack operate.....super messy and unprecise. The lack of skill and experience from both goalkeeper and players made it a huge disadvantage for the Bullets as the Eagles kept diving in for the kill. The Eagles knew it, saw it and took complete advantage of it.

We're looking forward to claiming the next division title. The one that should be ours already.

The first game proved to be a little more difficult for the Bullets to take charge of as they struggled to find the back of the Trojans net. Credit goes to the Trojans as they scored the opening goal. Unfortunately they couldn't hold their lead for as long as they would've liked. They went on to concede two goals before the last whistle went. If they had their entire team playing I think it would've made a huge difference. Playing with only one and a half lines they managed to stave off constant attacks from the Bullets and even managed a few great counter attacks. A BIG "well done" to both junior teams.

Amazingly, the game between Spartans and Inne was a nail biter from start to finish. Like the guys from Brave Heart fighting and getting pushed back and then fighting back some more, it was a see-saw game. Just when you thought that the main character played by Mel Gibson was going to kick butt you get his best friend giving him up to the enemy on the battlefield and the tables are turned and there's a truce for a brief moment in time. This was how it was tonight as both teams wouldn't admit defeat.

Tomorrow, the final game for the Eagles as we seal our place as Div. 2 Champs and maybe a complete shut-out if we win all our games.

Here we go, another nite of what should make for some interesting games at the arena. The thought of suggesting that either game would be better than the other shouldn't have crossed anyone's minds at all. Yes, yes, of course the Div. 2 game will be a little more amateurish compared to the Div. 1 but with even keeled teams playing each other it should all be lots of fun. It wouldn't do Spartans or Inne any good at all to have their game end in a draw. Unfortunately, without Deswyn coming to their rescue this time around I doubt that Inne will withstand the onslaught of the 300. But we shall see what the outcome is.

My call this evening, Bullets to win by 2 goals and Spartans to win by 1.

Coming from Canada and growing up as a player and big fan of ice hockey I was overjoyed to find out that Malaysia had a sport very close to floor hockey in floorball. It is a very challenging game in many ways! I enjoy the intensity and the competition that come with it as well as the new skills that you need to develop. Malaysian’s have a real love for the sport and it is great to see so many young people out playing it.

The scene at the arena was charged with anticipation as the teams took their place on court waiting for the whistle to go. The moment it went till the last one was blown it looked like a scene from "Lord Of The Rings" where the two forces met, collided and did furious battle with each other. Both not letting up as they knew if one did that would've been the end for them surely. Each blow was met and challenged by another. Each fighting tooth and nail to keep their sanity and composure not wanting to let loose all the fires of hell's fury show. Through it all, amazingly enough, the Eagles prevailed.......just clutching on to the small lead that we had by the skin of our teeth.

The Ants/Hawks game was also another exciting game. The Ants stung fast and furious and soon the Hawks found themselves trailing 10-1. But what a try at a comeback. The last 7 minutes of the games saw a determined Hawks team fight back with abandon and they were duly rewarded for their hard work. Unfortunately for them a little too much a little too late.

To the Ztec team........our sincere apologies to you guys if we offended you guys in any way at all. I hope all the ill feelings will be left on the court to die. Like I said....our is an open invitation to you all. :-)

There was a buzz at the arena today as the Eagles got ready to play the Trojans..........from all the mosquitos!!! We had all of 3, yes THREE spectators and a million mozzies that came to witness the shut-out.

Today we made PFA history as the first team to go over the 15 point mark as we tucked away 17 goals without a reply. Did it make us happy? Sure.......but we know that we're meant to be in a total different category playing against a different kettle of fish so to speak. As the Switchfoot song goes......."we were meant to live for so much more".

Drew and Reagan had a field day with if I'm not mistaken 5 goals each. The rest was a blur, without making small the efforts of the rest of the Dalat team. It was truly team effort that gave us the win even with only one and a half lines playing.

Thanks for your hard work and dedication guys, just two games left. Keep it up!!!

It was a nite where Rambo was in town, or felt like it. It looked as if he decided to pull out the M60 and gun everything down in his path. Where are all the bad guys...watch out and get out of the way before you're cut down to shreds. Both games looked and felt like it was dominated by the "home" teams.

Dalat started out a little sluggish the first period but proceeded to take control of the 2nd period. Unfortunately the goal post also saw lots of action as the ball kept pinging off it to deny a handful of players. Having a number of our players sick and or recovering from ailments did not stop the team, but instead fielding a fairly incomplete team gave us an opportunity to fine tune a few things.

As for the Spartan/Unihawks game, the Hawks tried to swoop in for the kill and seemed like they were going to give the Spartans a run for their money. Spartans drawing first blood fairly early in the game only to get a stinging reply within a minute or two. Unfortunately, the storm proved to be more of a hurricane for the Hawks as they struggled to keep possession of the ball. On the other hand, the Spartans, a little more seasoned and experienced pulled out their anti-aircraft guns and shot the Hawks down before they could even really take off.

All in all fairly entertaining games........but tomorrow holds another mystery as the Eagles continue their quest for "world domination".....oklah.......Div 2 domination to hopefully take our rightful place in Div 1 where we should be.

For a Canadian kid who grew up ice skating as soon as he could walk, figure skating at age two, and ice hockey at age four, living in Malaysia without any frozen ponds or local arenas with indoor ice is a radical departure from my life experiences. I either played hockey, watched hockey, or talked about hockey – even in the summers when we played road hockey using tennis balls on the pavement – twelve months of the year. While I really miss this, I have really enjoyed a similar sport in floorball. While many rules differ significantly from ice hockey, which frequently has caused me to ‘cool my heels’ in the penalty box, learning and participating in the local floorball league has been a rewarding experience. Meeting local and KL players has been great, giving me a chance to become acquainted with a great group of people outside of my normal connection points at Dalat. The competition can be intense, and passions get heated; but this is a thrilling part of the sport. Floorball athletes here work hard to learn the sport and develop their skills, and they and their supporters promote their teams enthusiastically. So while there are no hockey arenas in Penang, and the National Hockey League cannot be viewed on Astro, I’m not adrift in the absence of ice!

OK, now that you know I'm a movie buff......if you didn't, now you do.

Anyway, I guess you can't win 'em all as far as my wonderful predictions and forecasts go. That's what makes life interesting. If every prediction came true that would make for a super boring life.

Boring games was definitely the last thing that we had last nite. Altho the Trojans were trounced by Ztec, they played hard and fought valiantly to keep the deficit to a minimum. Perseverance would be the key word for them. They've had an uphill battle, with such a young team playing together. They were severely short of their key players but yet made the effort to stay composed. Ztec had the upper hand, saw the opportunity and seized the moment. They played a fairly organized game and picked the Trojans apart piece by piece.

The FireAnts/Inne game was absurdly fun to referee and I'm also sure to watch. Never a dull moment in the entire 1hr of the game, yes, we had so many stops that it ended up taking that long. A few mishaps here and there, but what's a game without some of those right? It was for the first time like watching a decent professional floorball game at APAC or the WFC. Fairly fluid and fast movements from both teams. Both fought and defended well, each fighting not to give in or admit defeat. Before the match started Linken (their Manager) came over and said, "We're gonna prove your predictions wrong tonight." Unfortunately for the FireAnts, Inne were out for blood this time. Reaching in to the very depths they mustered every ounce of fight they had and let it all loose and it paid off for them.

The next question for them is, do they have anymore fight left in them after last nite? I guess only time will tell.

When Push Comes To Shove

Ztec vs. Eagles 3-4

If Russel Crowe were at the arena tonight he would have been proud of both teams. Looking like a scene out of "Gladiator", where every man was for himself, the arena looked like a battlefield from people pushing or shoving and just short of kicking, stabbing or killing each other.

It was unbelievable!! Both teams played absolutely awesomely rotten floorball. If there was a judge on how "pretty" it was we would have been given a 1 out of 10 (10 being the perfect score that is).

Dalat, having not prepped themselves at all by talking or warming up together went in to the game completely unprepared. We didn't even have our lines ready when the face off whistle first blew. It totally showed the first period. Fortunately for us we scored two good goals when we did.

Being given just a 5 minute break between periods proved to be a lifesaver. That made all the difference as we could consolidate and talk thru all we needed to do to raise the standard a little higher to clinch our second game.

To be fair to Ztec the game could've gone either way tonight.....so we look forward to playing the next game. Eh.......don't push so much lah.......ok :-)

Sunday looks like it's not coming around fast enough. Eagles are waiting to sink their talons into a super game. We had to wait for Termin to come back from his NS training where he was being fattened for the kill..........lol...........A very long absence from floorball for him but I'm sure every inch of muscle in him is crying out to play. Craziness you might call it but yes it's true.......Floorball Crazy!!!!

Who knew that this day would come when brother would be fighting brother in the floorball arena for the division title? Once members of our Dalat Eagles team now having formed their own team to further spread the love for the game. These guys have taken the bold step to form their own team and train their guys from scratch. The guys I'm talking about Termin, Moy, Jo-Wyee, Ken Wye, Oliver and gang.

We are super proud of you and we look forward to a great game.

A fairly close prediction if I'd say so myself. Both games were played well and hard by all four teams.

The difference between the Bullets first game and last nites was that they shot themselves in the foot when they stopped taking charge like they did the first game against the Trojans but rather decided that they wanted to attack more. Unfortunately for them it didn't quite work and they lost their fiery sting.

The pin that broke the camels back in the second game was just the lack of experience on the part of the Hawks.....they did a superb job of fighting back and had a number of great counter attacks. Inne however, with all their years of experience lacked a lot of communication with each other. Something that maybe Linken, who is currently their "coach" can work on with them to improve as they work at getting back their title.

Tonight's predictions we're looking at Ztec playing all out and maybe getting a score of 5-2 against the Bullets. Altho' Termin isn't around to be the backbone of the team I think they might be able to hold their own well.

As for the Innebandy/ Unihawks game we're looking at Innebandy gunning for gold to be close to the top of the leader board with the Fireants coz they know if they lose this game they'll be a little too far behind to catch up. As for score predictions we're looking at a 8-3 score in favour of Innebandy.

A Night Wrought With Drama.

Within just 2 minutes of the Trojans-Eagles game kicking off, our Captain (Yeoh Jun Wooi) slipped and fell so hard on his head that it put him into a seizure and everything came to a grinding stop. For the next 20 minutes while awaiting anxiously for an ambulance to show up, everyone at the arena were silently sending up a prayer for him. Two ambulances finally show up at the Dalat school campus simultaneously from different hospitals.

Riding in the ambulance with him to the hospital was another story. With sirens blaring from the moment we left the campus to the time we got in to the hospital it took us 20-30minutes to go just a mere 10km. UNBELIEVABLE!!! The traffic in Penang is unrelenting and stubborn.....the cars just wouldn't budge. If the situation was more critical the patient would have died on the way there.

Anyway, to cut a long story short, we got to the hospital and got all the necessary checks done and the neuro surgeon says that Jun Wooi's doing fine. They're keeping him overnight for observation but will probably release him tomorrow to go home.

With the court looking like a battle scene from the movie 300, the Spartans made their legend proud tonight by beating defending champs Innebandy. It was a hard fought game but they pushed themselves to the limit, defended well and of course with Sharon coming out of retirement to back her team how could they lose.

Does having 5 national or state players compared to just 3 make a difference to a teams game? I guess it does for the time being. Contact Fireants made sure they sealed their first game as they took apart the Unihawks.

Both super exciting starter games but who will be the one to take the second game? Can either Unihawks or even the Trojans upset the balance and steal a couple of points back for themselves as Fireants and Bullets seem to be the teams to beat at this point of time.

2005 - After just six months of playing the game we set up and hosted the first ever floorball league in Penang and Malaysia that very year.

The six teams that participated were the Islanderz, Frontliners, Innebandy!Co., Contact and Dalat 1 & 2. It was a thrilling month and a half of games played at our indoor gym. The cheers resounded to the few neighbouring blocks surrounding Dalat school. The crowd was amazing and extremely emotional towards the teams they supported. What a blast it was!

The Islanderz went on to take the championship league cup that was very generously donated by the Rogers family , 1st runner-up went to Innebandy!Co. and 2nd runner-up spot went to Contact.

Dalat didn't win any medals but won the respect of many teams because we played hard and gave it our all. For only having played for six months we did exceptionally well and it was just the start of great things to come.
